My dream came true and I finally learned how to spin on a spinning wheel. It´s not like I haven´t spun before, I used to spin on the drop spindle (since spring 2009 when I learned how to) and have not been able to make yarn on the spinning wheel even if I tried it out many times. Why? I honestly don´t know. Maybe it was the fact that when spinning on the wheel you have to coordinate both feet and hands (and brains!) and that was too much...
Anyhow, My first made yarn in the picture above consists of BFL and Polwarth. Both fibers purchased from KnitLob´s Lair. It´s uneven and it has too much twist in it. But...I LOVE IT! It´s sooo pretty! And soft! I have no clue whatsoever how many meters I have of it. I haven´t measured it. I weighed it though: 130g.
It is a 2-ply and plied clock wise because I spun it counter clock wise.

The next yarn coming up is spun clock wise and now I´m really trying to make it even. Counting as I spin makes it easier to draft and the fibers are spun together nicely. The spinning wheel is a Kiikka spinning wheel. It´s made in Finland and the maker is Wilho Ulvén. So I named it Wilho. It works really well for beeing an old gentleman. We believe it to have been made in 1930-1940.
Kiikka is a municipality north from Helsinki. In the early 1900´ the area was famous for their spinning wheels and if you wanted quality, you bought a Kiikka! The municipality still has a spinning wheel in their coat of arms.

I promised to tell a little about my years after school. I graduated in 2011 and got a fantastic summer vacancy for three weeks as an Advisor, teaching children how to weave on the loom. After that I got the offer to stay during the whole summer through out the holidays. In the autumn the offer was to counsel young adults teaching them basic skills in knitting, crochet and weaving. In 2013 I´m still working there. My employer is The Finnish Arts and Crafts Association in Oulu and boy have I learned much! Right now I´m in the middle of planning the schedule for the next group of young adults. I´m really thankful for getting to do what I love most: making things, teaching how-to and inventing new handicrafts. Come visit us. Our shop is open Mo-Fri 10-18 and Sat 10-16.

Here we go again... I´ve been hibernating like..forever. A new year is before us and I am trying to do this once again. Blogging. Yesterday I started a new project on my knitting machine. Yes, I found a machine last year...or was it the year before...heck I don´t remember but that´s not important, what´s interesting though is that this absolute wonder of inventions makes it able to finish a sweater or what ever other apparel in no time. Knitting machines seems to be in fashion once again. Some knitters don´t believe in machine knitting saying it isn´t real knitting but I don´t care, I do knit both by hand and by machine when feeling for it.

The 80´s and 90´s was their golden age and you could find all kinds of machines on the market. Machines for fine yarns to really bulky ones. And then there were linkers, which created round projects like hats and other similar garments. You can find those on YouTube if you want to know how they work. I believe the first knitting machines were circular (correct me if I´m wrong) - the linker is also used to make pantyhoses!
The only negative thing I can think of when using my knitting machine is that it makes noise. My neighbors won´t like it if I´m dragging the carriage over the needles late in the evening...or....come to think of it, I could buy them ear plugs!

Well this was my first post in a year and a half. If you´ll visit again some time soon, I´ll tell you all about what I´ve been up to since finishing school and all.

Valmista tuli! Tätä villatakkia on tehty yli kaksi vuotta. Sitä on neulottu ja purettu, neulottu ja purettu ja neulottu ja purettu ja niin edelleen...
.
Välillä tuntui ihan toivottomalta koko homma kun en saanut mitään täsmäämään. Käytin nimittäin ihan löyhästi valmista ohjetta Silver Belle VogueKnittingista (ilmainen ohje bye the way) joka löytyy täältä.
.
Modifioin ohjeen sopimaan tyttäreni toiveeseen villatakista ja langat olen värjännyt itse. Nyt voin ihan hyvällä mielellä todeta että siitä tuli just sellainen kuin pitikin. Jos joku on kiinnostunut teknisistä tiedoista niin ne löytyy Ravelrysta täältä (linkin pitäisi aueta kaikille klikkaajille koska se on julkinen).

Hakaset löysin paikallisesta Nappi-Kikasta. Niitä oli kuulkaa niin monta valikoimassa että oli hirmuisen vaikea päättää mitkä ottaa. Onnistuin kuitenkin valitsemaan oikeat ja tytär on onnellinen!

A nice week indeed with lovely weather and SUN. Yes, we had sunshine almost everyday with a terribly low temperature...-30 C. But staying indoors doing stuff is alright I guess knowing that going outdoors will freeze your nose off....

The recipe for the Parmesan Bread and the Butter Eye Buns is as follows:

Parmesan Bread, makes about 16 :

500 ml lukewarm water

50 g fresh yeast

2 tsp salt

1 tsp honey (this is only for the yeast, it´s not making the bread sweet)

100 ml olive oil

about 720 g wheat flour (1200 ml)

ground parmesan for topping (can´t tell you how much)

I´m not going to describe the making process of the bread as I believe you all know how to knead a dough. When the dough has risen to its double size, knead it on a floured surface and make 16 small breads. Place them on baking pans and let them rest a while before spreading some water on each of them and topping them with ground parmesan. Bake in 200 C for about 15 minutes.

Butter Eye Buns, makes about 20:

100 g melted butter (margarine? no can do!!! It has to be butter!)

500 ml lukewarm milk

50 g fresh yeast

130 g sugar (about 150 ml)

½ tsp salt

2 tsp ground cardamom

about 780 g wheat flour (1300 ml)

1 egg (this is for glazing)

butter and sugar for topping

The same goes for this recipe as I´m not describing the making process. You know how to knead a dough! When the dough has risen to it´s double size, make 20 buns, place on baking pans, let them rest for a while. Then make a hole with your thumb in the middle of each bun, glaze with the egg, put 1 tsp butter and 1-2 tsp sugar in each hole. Bake in 225 C for 10-12 minutes.

Viikkoni kuvissa. Hienot aurinkoiset päivät. Pakkasta. Leivontaohjeet on tässä:

Parmesansämpylät ja Voisilmäpullat

Parmesansämpylät, noin 16 kpl:

5 dl lämmintä vettä

2 tl suolaa

1 tl hunajaa (hiivan ravintoa, ei vaikuta makuun)

50 g tuoretta hiivaa

1 dl oliiviöljyä

1,2 L vehnäjauhoja

päälle parmesanraastetta

En selitä taikinantekoa, te osaatte kaikki vaivata kunnon leipätaikinan, eiks vaan? Kun taikina on noussut kaksinkertaiseksi, leivo n. 16 sämpylää, laita pelleille, kohota, voitele vedellä ja ripottele parmesanraastetta päälle. Paista 200 C n. 15 min.

Voisilmäpulla, noin 20 kpl:

100 g sulatettua voita (margariini ei käy, sori! :))

5 dl lämmintä maitoa

1,5 dl sokeria

½ tl suolaa

2 tl jauhettua kardemummaa

n. 1,3 L vehnäjauhoja

1 kananmuna voitelemiseen ja voita ja sokeria päälle.

Sama koskee tämän taikinan tekoa. En selitä. Te osaatte varmaan paremmin kuin minä sen tehdä. Leivo kohoamisen jälkeen n. 20 pullaa. Laita pelleille kohoamaan. Kohoamisen jälkeen, paina jokaiseen pullaan peukalolla kolo ja voitele kananmunalla. Laita noin teelusikallinen voita ja 1-2 tl sokeria jokaiseen koloon. Paista 225 n. 10-12 min.

Only in finnish this time, sorry...

Se on sit ensimmäinen kirjoitelma tälle vuodelle. Syksyllä en saanut aikaiseksi blogata kertaakaan työharjoittelujaksosta, mutta voin kuitenkin kertoa että olin kolmessa paikassa ja sain valmistaa kaikenlaisia esineitä, olla kaksilla messuilla mukana, toimia kerhonvetäjänä ja leikkiä opettajaa. Kiirettä piteli ja mukavaa oli.
Työharjoittelujakson jälkeen palailtiin kouluun ja joulun jälkeen ollaan alettu suunnittelemaan lopputyötä. Yllä oleva kuva on täkänän kutomisen harjoittelua. Olen päättänyt valmistaa seinätekstiilin täkänätekniikalla. Voin kertoa että se on kaikkea muuta kuin helppoa...

Tänään, vapaapäivän ja yksinolon kunniaksi, ompelin itselleni jotain. Aurinko paistoi ja kauniin vihreä-valkopalloisen kankaan inspiroimana sain aikaiseksi tunikan.

Välillä pidettiin (minä ja ompelukone) lakisääteisen kaffitauon. Se tais venähtää hieman pidemmäksi kuin se 12 minuuttia mutta kun on itsensä pomo niin eipä tuo haitannut. Eväs oli piirakka ja focaccia. Jälkimmäisestä ei ole kuvaa kun söin sen ennen todistusaineiston laatimisen...

Omenapiirakka on muuten isoäitini reseptin mukaan:

.

Isoäiti Airan omenapaistos

3 omenaa, kuorittuina ja lohkottuina, levitetään uunipannulle (leivinpaperoitu)

ripottele kanelia ja sokeria lohkojen päälle

1 kaffikuppi sokeria + 3 kananmunaa vatkataan kuohkeaksi vaahdoksi

sekoita keskenään 3 kaffikuppia jauhoja + 2 tl leivinjauhetta ja lisää ne vuorotellen

200 g sulatetun voin kanssa

kaada seos omenalohkojen päälle ja levitä varovasti nuolijalla (seos on hieman paksua)

paista 200 C n. 20-25 min. Kumoa paistos nurinpäin jolloin lohkot tulee näkyviin. On hyvää, taattu! Lakisääteisten taukojen jälkeen sain sitten tunikan valmiiksi. En ehtinyt kuvata sitä auringonvalossa joten piti tyytyä sähköisiin ratkaisuihin. Tunika on ihan kiva...mutta...miksi ihmeessä en ajatellut noita palleroita hieman tarkemmin...etulaskosten ansiosta pallerot on ihan miten sattuu. Ne tekee siitä niin epämääräisen hajanaisen etten tiedä kehtaanko käyttää sitä ilman jotain asustetta tai villatakkia. Ja mä kun niin tykkäsin tuosta kankaasta....Lopputulos on kaikesta huolimatta tyydyttävä ja tulen ehdottomasti käyttämään tätä. Se on ihana.

Tämän kanssa haluan PUNAISTA! Mistä mä löydän punaiset Mary Janet? Punainen villatakki mulla jo on ja värjäsin just tukankin punaiseksi...Peppi Pitkätossun punaiseksi! Huomenna lähden kenkäkauppaan!!!
